Perfect for a Couple

Excellent spot for a couple of relaxing days. Particularly well suited to us because it is pet friendly and had a secure garden that the dogs could enjoy as we enjoyed sitting outside on the raised patio area.Good friendly village location with a well stocked shop a few doors away and a good “chippy” a little further down the street. Would recommend it.

All you need for a comfortable relaxing break

  •   5 of 5

We had the upstairs property which has 2 good sized bedrooms and a cozy lounge. The kitchen was well appointed and the whole flat was clean and modern. There is a large shared back garden which is secure and our two small dogs loved it! The village has a small shop for provisions and 4 pubs – we enjoyed the music and craic in Macintyres and at least 2 of the pubs have beer gardens. There is no restaurant as such in the village but Mary Murtins in the next village is good and there are plenty restuarants in Donegal Town and Killibegs A taxi back from Donegal town is around 30 Euros though there is a bus service. Overall this was a great place for a break and we hope to be back – maybe to try the ground floor apartment (we got a sneeky peek at this from our neighbours!)

We discovered the snug last year and spent 5 fabulous days discovering Donegal and the surrounding area. This year we decided to extend our stay to 10 nights as we loved it so much. The snug has everything you need to have a relaxing break -situated only 10 minutes from Killybegs and 15 minutes from Donegal town.
It’s the perfect getaway with a beautiful enclosed garden, with amazing views, which our dog loved, a walled patio area, ideal for an early morning cup of tea while you take in the peace and tranquillity that surrounds you. That’s providing you can actually drag yourself out of the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in!
Dunkineely’s residents will offer you a very warm welcome to the village and Macs bar, situated just a few doors away, offers great hospitality and craic every evening and the traditional night in Macintyres each Wednesday is not to be missed.
If cooking on holiday is not your thing – no problem, Baskins are open 6 nights a week and the food is fab.
We’re already planning our return trip to the snug next year – this time for a full 2 weeks!

What a great stay in Dunkineely!. The Apartment was very clean and comfortable and the yard was beautiful. The location was perfect for excursions to St Johns point (a can’t miss), Slieve League, Donegal town, and many fabulous small villages. Cyndi Graham, hand weaving studio is fabulous!

Great place to base yourself

We stayed for two nights in the Snug, and we really enjoyed the apartment – the views are fantastic, and the location is great for visiting anywhere between Donegal town and the Slieve League cliffs. The apartment itself is a lovely spot, very clean and has everything you need. If staying here you should definitely visit the Slieve League cliffs, Killybegs and explore the many beaches in the area.

Just spent a couple of nights here. Everything was excellent and we were especially impressed with the dog friendly garden. The weather was kind to us making our stay even more enjoyable. The stove added a really cosy feeling to the apartment. The owner was very helpful and we would definitely recommend this accommodation.

Apartment was really lovely and perfectly kept. Unfortunately the weather was pretty bad. It is Donegal after all! 🙂 but the apartment was fitting with a log burner and the best electric blanket ever. For us the best part was that it was pet friendly. Not only do they allow dogs but there is a huge enclosed garden. Enough room for dogs to play and it’s really secure! 🙂

“Excellent property with great views”

The property is well equipped, clean and comfortable. The owner went out of her way to ensure that our every need was catered for. There is a well stocked shop within 50yds and a cafe in the village. The surrounding area has plenty to offer. We would be very happy to return

The Snug

  •  5 out of 5

We stayed at The Snug for three nights. The Snug was clean and well equipped. There was all the information you needed and plenty of tourist brochures. The owner was more than helpful when we had a problem with the toilet and was all sorted within the hour. Would loved to have met the owner and look forward to staying in her property in Sligo in 2015. Well worth it

“A little bit of heaven”

Thank you for a wonderful venue for our five days. We were a party of 3.5 – 2 adults, one teenager and a dog! Everything was just as described on the website – the apartment was spotless and very well equipped. The directions made it very easy to find. Dunkineely is a great base for exploring south-west Donegal. It is only 10 miles from Donegal town which has some nice shops and restaurants – for a cheap and cheerful dinner it’s hard to beat the Harbour restaurant for its lovely pizza and chips. Mountcharles is a very pretty village between Donegal town and Dunkineely. After a nice walk on the seafront, you can treat yourself to a fabulous meal in the Village Tavern – this is really wonderful food. If you don’t wish to leave Dunkineely, Baskins’ Cafe do very nice chips (we did not eat anything else there so I can’t comment on the rest of its menu). St. John’s Point is gorgeous – we regretted that we hadn’t brought bikes as it is 7 miles from Dunkineely to the point and would have made a lovely cycle. Instead we drove down to the lighthouse – spectacular views – and the fishermen in the party caught some great mackerel off the rocks near the lighthouse. If you wish to leave the car at home there is a lovely small beach about 40 mins walk from the apartment. Well worth taking the car out for are the Slieve League cliffs, the folk village at Glencolumbkille and the lovely village of Ardara. The latter has some great looking restaurants and pubs. For walkers there are looped walks in Glencolumbkille, great walking at Slieve League and the Bluestacks mountains.

“Excellent Location”

The snug is a real discovery. It has everything you could need on arrival. The apartment is clean, decorated with great taste and is close to all amenities. An ideal location to discover Donegal. The garden is completely private with a sea view in the distance. A great place to relax after the day. The local people as indeed the owner were very welcoming and provided excellent information on where to go and what to see. I will certainly stay again and will recommend this location to friends.

“The View”

I can only start with a very big THANK YOU!!! We had a great time in this cosy little village AND in your wonderful apartment. Everything was great – your housekeepers so kind, you are a very nice person, the flat was absolutely grand- the view, the kitchen, the view, the bedrooms, the view, the sitting room, the view, the garden, the view, the off-street parking and last not least: THE VIEW! Additional there was a supermarket on the right side and (HMMM…) four M(a)c Pubs on the other. We met so many friendly people in Dunkineely – of course anywhere in Donegal – I know we will back soon. In August we’ll be in Ireland again and I will show my friends the places I like and love – your’s is one of these. The Snug is a wonderful and cosy place to enjoy relaxed holidays and I can recommend it without any doubt. Thanks again, best regards to your housekeepers and Dermot as well, and all the best for you.

We stayed for the first time in April and fell in love with Dunkineely. Sheila has thought of everything to make our stay perfect. We had lunch in the Village Tavern on Sunday and would highly recommend it. Stay at the Snug its fantastic!

“2 hidden gems”

Our party booked both cottages at the same time. Everything better than described. Clean as a whistle. Whole booking process totally smooth. Already recommended to others. Visits to Slieve League, Maghera strand and caves, Assaranca waterfall, Glengesh, Teelin, Loughros Point, Ardara for tweeds, Donegal town itself, and St John’s point can all be accomplished in 3 to 4 days. The pubs in Dunkineely are where you can meet real people, and listen to musicians. Baskins is good for everyday eating. A treat is Castlemurray house currently around 50 euro for the full spread in the evening. Gourmet

The Snug unit which we rented was large, graciously furnished, highly modern and equipped kitchen. Bedrooms were simply fantastic. Views of the bay above words. TV, Gas fired fireplace were added bonuses. The location in County Donegal allowed us access to the local butcher who cut meat to our specifications, superior butcher. We bought fresh Atlantic cod in nearby Killybegs directly from the boat.. UMMMMMM. Access to a full service grocery store was in nearby Killybegs while a convenience store was just a 2 minute walk.  The local council office across the street offered internet services at a very reasonable price between 9-12 daily.

We loved the Garden Apartment at the Snug. Everything was 1st. Class, so comfy and well equipped. The large enclosed garden was great for Cap, our collie, who was able to play around freely while we relaxed on the patio and enjoyed the beautiful view. There was lots to do, great beaches, lovely walks and plenty of good eating places all within easy reach. The friendly, helpful service we received was excellent. A great apartment, great location, a real tranquil haven yet right in the middle of town ! We would highly recommend this property.

“The Snug garden apartment is a real hidden treasure. We stayed there twice this summer and each time found our stay absolutely perfect. A huge plus for us is that it is pet friendly and having access to the garden was great freedom for our dog and also we could enjoy the beautiful weather at that time. Our contact with the owner was extremely helpful and welcoming and she provided us with lots of information re walks etc. The apartment itself is very tastefully decorated and finished to an exceptional high standard with every convenience provided, including a well equipped kitchen. Castle Murray Hotel is close by with a superb restaurant/bar and is also pet friendly! The location of the apartment is ideal for exploring the beauty of Donegal and we would highly recommend this property for a welcoming luxurious stay with every comfort provided. In fact cant wait to go back”

What an amazing find
“This was our third visit to the region. We stayed at the snug garden apartment over the August bank holiday weekend. I have stayed in other 4* rated self catering properties, and this place outshines them all. Newly refurbished to a very high standard , with a secluded garden, its a couples real retreat, and I would rate it above any other place I have stayed in the area. We went toe relax and get refreshed and that’s exactly what we got. The apartment was spotless and well maintained. Its a 5 * property! The snug is within reach of Donegal Town and a short distance from Killybegs and not far from the Slieve League cliffs. There are beaches nearby, and plenty of lovely walks in the area. The snug is situated in Dunkineely which has a real charm and home from home feeling. If you’re looking for a taste of what the real Ireland has to offer, you’ll get it here, with a warm and friendly welcome! I’d recommend checking out Kitty Kelly’s on the other side of Killybegs they do amazing food. We were in McIntyres bar and McLaughlins bar which were full of craic. There’s a trad band that plays on a Sunday from 5.00pm to 9.00pm. I look forward to our next visit and would recommend this place to anyone.”

“Lovely part of Ireland – surrounded by so many beautiful beaches and quaint little towns. The pace of life is just that little bit slower, just what you want for a relaxing break! The accomodation was the ‘icing on the cake’. Family friendly, very clean and reasonably priced. The washing machine really came in handy with the kids’ daily visits to the beach – everything is there – even down to the coffee maker! We thoroughly recommend and hope to return again soon!”

Staying at The Snug was a delight the very well looked after apartment
was decorated to a very high standard and the large garden was great
for our dog to enjoy his freedom playing and racing around. The tidy
village was a lovely resting place after our days out to all the nearby towns in County Donegal my fiancee and I and not forgetting the dog visited. The quaint pubs in the village welcomed us all with their friendly chat and craic and I would have no hesitation in recommending The Snug Dunkineely as the perfect place to stay when in Donegal.

Herbert  Munich, June 2013

The Snug is a fantastic place to stay in Dunkineely. Firstly, the accommodation is meticulously clean, has a lovely garden and sea views from the living room and back bedroom. We had a fabulous week there and Sheila has a great folder to browse through if you are looking at things to do, places to visit and eat etc – a guide in itself. The location is great as it is close to Donegal town , Killybegs and Glenties. And don’t forget the highest cliffs in Europe, Sliabh League – truly magnificent on a beautiful day. If you are eating out then “a must do” is the Castlemurray Hotel as “a treat”. In the village itself both Macs Bar and McIntyres are great places to get to know the locals – that’s if they don’t get to know you first!!! We had a great trad night in McIntyres so much so we didn’t want to leave! So all in all The Snug is aptly named and the location spoils you bigtime – we can’t recommend it enough.

“Many thanks once again for a great holiday. This is one of the best equipped cottage we have ever seen. Everything to a high standard.  A great base from which to visit al what Donegal has to offer. The view from the master bedroom was like a ever changing painting of Benbulben mountain, St. Johns point and Donegal bay.   Looking forward to come back again.”

“We are a family of two adults and two children (age 9 and 6) who spent a great week in July at The Snug. It is a lovely comfortable, clean and tidy apartment. It has a great private garden which the children enjoyed playing in and has a nice patio area. There is a great view of Ben Bulben and the sea from the living room and main bedroom. It is definately the best equipped kitchen we have ever used when on a self catering holiday, down to coffee, tin foil and j-cloths. It is a nice and cosy place and very peaceful. The locals are very friendly and helpful, which is a big help when you are exploring a new place. Dunkineely is a great base for holidaying in Donegal and there is a great variety of things to do, places to see and explore. Also, a great range of places to eat all within a short drive or taxi journey away. Overall we had a great stay here and Sheila was very helpful with giving recommendations of places to visit and running a very nice place. Thanks again Sheila and would definitely recommend a stay there if you want a relaxing holiday.”

“We have just recently returned from our stay at The Snug and had a fantastic time.   We found the house very comfortable and equipped with everything you could possibly need.  The views from the back of the house are fantastic and the children loved playing in the large garden.  The village of Dunkineely is lovely and an ideal base – close to the beautiful beach at St John’s Point and also near to Killybegs and Donegal Town where there is lots to see and do.  Sheila was really accommodating ( providing a travel cot at short notice ) and a pleasure to deal with.  We would highly recommend The Snug and look forward to returning soon.”
Seymour family, Belfast. July 2012

We stayed at the Snug in Dunkineely over St. Patricks weekend.  Our every need was met in this well equipped accomodation.  The standard of cleanliness was immaculate.  The sea view from my bedroom window was an added bonus.  The electric blanket on my bed was a nice touch as was the milk, tea and coffee.  There was lots to do in the neighbouring towns of Killybegs and Donegal.  In my opinion The Snug is a real gem.  I felt very at home during my fantastic stay there.  I look forward to visiting in the near future.
Best wishes Veronica Westmeath March 2012.
